When the lights go out in Downtown Mobile on Saturday, don’t call the power company, it could be on purpose. March 29th is the day people around the world turn off their lights for one hour to point out our impact on climate change.

The concept for one local radio station started with a trip to the Sunshine State. Gene Murrell, Program Director with 92 WZEW said he read about the idea in Sky Magazine, and now it’s a Proclamation. He read the Proclamation to me at the radio station. Here is an excerpt: “I, Samuel L. Jones, Mayor of the City of Mobile, along with the City Council do herby proclaim 8 p.m. on Saturday March 29th, 2008 as Earth Hour in the City of Mobile."

Earth Hour is a worldwide event. "This actually started in Sydney last year. It was the first year they did it. All they said was that if everyone turned off their lights for one hour that would be the equivalent of taking 48,000 cars off the road."With last year’s success in Sydney, the World Wildlife Federation decided to go worldwide. In our part of the world, we are celebrating with a free concert tomorrow night.

"During the actual Global Earth Hour, we'll be all candlelit and it will be kind of cool, hanging out in Cathedral Square playing some cool music. We got Brett LaGrave, Mikey and Trey, and Wes Loper, all three great local musicians."
Bernie Fogarty with Alabama Power says this event should highlight how you spend your electric buck. “Don't just wait for Earth Hour to get here, if you have a light on in your house that is not being used turn it off. This will get people thinking about how they can get more value for their dollar."

So how much energy would you save in an hour? According to Alabama Power, this is the mathematical breakdown on how much power you use per hour. First we start with one customer. They use about 1,000 kilowatts per month. So we take about 30 days in a month and divide 1,000 by 30. That equals 33.3 kilowatts per day. There's 24 hours in a day, so 33.3 divided by 24 is about 1.4 kilowatts per hour. So what does that mean to you? Well that is the equivalent of 14 100 watt light bulbs burning in one hour.

Tired of the math? Murrell wants you to take away this simple message. "This is our home, this is our Planet. This is something we can do, regardless how small it is, to make it last a lot longer for our children, and grandchildren, for years to come."

I don’t much think I would want to be sitting around in downtown Mobile in the dark for an hour.  A hoodie might get me!!!!!!!!
