"They started to feel depressed and sad and can't get out of bed and feel hopeless and stressed out," says Dr. Kimberly Whitchard. Whitchard is a clinical psychologist in Baldwin County. She's been following both murder cases of Lewis and Colby. "Sometimes it might lead to a mother to do some drastic measures to try and alleviate her stress."
Lewis has been accused of killing her four-week old daughter and burying the Prichard baby's body in a trash can. Colby was arrested in 2005 on capital murder charges. Investigators working the case say Colby drowned her newborn son, wrapped the body in a blanket and buried him in her back yard in Orange Beach.
"It can be very stressful on new mothers," says Whitchard. "All of a sudden you've got to take care of somebody totally dependent on you. Mothers need to have a support network in place."
Law enforcement agencies are also concerned about the increase in violent crime involving women. The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office says women are being arrested in record numbers.
"We have 89 females incarcerated in the corrections center right now, and that's a record for us," says Capt. Steve Arthur with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office. "You always look at females as the kinder, gentler sex, and we're seeing a lot of violence from females and it's causing a lot of problems."

Jury: Mom Killed Her Baby

What was Lewis suffering from when she came into court acting like an ignorant and cocky sociopath?
