MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - In a letter from federal prison, former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman says that he remains confident his conviction will be overturned. He said a congressional inquiry will show that Republican politics was behind the probe of his Democratic administration.
Siegelman and former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy were convicted last year of bribery and other charges in government corruption case. Siegelman was sentenced to more than seven years in prison.
Siegelman said he believes former presidential aide Karl Rove was behind the federal investigation. He calls his case the 'Watergate of 2008.'
Responding to questions in a letter sent by AP to Siegelman at the federal prison in Oakdale, Louisiana, the veteran political figure said he is doing fine.
Federal prosecutors have denied that Rove or anyone in the Bush administration had any influence over the Justice Department's prosecution of Siegelman.
Near the end of the five-page letter, Siegelman indicates he wants to be a political player again in Alabama.
The House Judiciary Committee's chairman has asked the Justice Department for documents involving its prosecution of Siegelman.

How the mighty fall.  He would get more respect if he just owned up to being caught and start over.  That is it, he just got caught.  Politics is now a dirty word and no one can be trusted in politics.  There are others out there who have done the same or worse than Siegelman and they have not been caught YET.  As my grandfather use to say ‘I’d rather have any kind of tick on me than a politic.’
