The President of the NAACP Alabama State Conference, Edward Vaughn, was among one of the injured.
News Five spoke to a family friend of Vaughn who says the three are lucky to be alive.
Officials say 73-year-old Edward Vaughn and two sisters 61-year-old Nettie Bryant and 48-year-old Janice Jones, all of Dothan, were sent to the University of South Alabama Medical Center after Friday's crash.
Authorities say the three people were all riding in one car, when they were involved in a chain reaction accident on the Eastbound I-10 at the Highway 90 overpass.
According to his family, Vaughn suffered burns over fifty percent of his body. President of Mobile's NAACP Jimmie Gardner is a family friend of Vaughn. He says despite Vaughn's injuries, he's in good spirits.
"Even under the circumstances of that tragic event he was still Mr. Vaughn, talking and moving and getting your attention, giving you the thumbs up and letting you know that everything's fine and everything's going to be alright," Said Jimmie Gardner, Vaughn's family friend.
Vaughn was here just last month for the NAACP's 55th State Conference.
A spokesman for the hospital says Vaughn remains in critical condition and would not comment on the condition of the two sisters.
Gardner says he spoke to the two sisters, who he says are doing well.
