Missing Baby

Prichard police are investigating a case involving a missing four week old baby. The infant's mother, Garetha Tyese Lewis, 18, says she gave the infant up for adoption Friday, but has since changed her mind. Now that she wants the baby back, Lewis says she has not been able to reach the adoption agency. During a press conference called Wednesday by Prichard Police Chief Lawrence Battiste, Lewis told reporters she gave her baby to two women at USA Children's and Women's hospital, who identified themselves as representatives of a local adoption agency. Lewis says she found the agency on a list given to her by a social worker, who she could not identify. Lewis says she destroyed the paperwork and has no proof of the meeting. Chief Battiste and a representative from Child protection services are investigating the case. While they say neither department was able to reach the agency Wednesday, News Five made contact with someone at the agency's office, who said they have not taken in any new children in the last six months.
