The Humane Society of Escambia County, Alabama tried to save a dog that was beaten, shot multiple times and then thrown away.
When employees of the Dollar General in Brewton took out the trash Sunday, they found a mixed breed, female dog in the dumpster. The Humane Society says DeeDee was initially very alert and friendly. She wagged her tail and licked the hands of her rescuers. But x-rays revealed three bullets that were lodged in DeDee's front leg and neck and extensive blunt force trauma to her hips and spine. Her internal organs were also damaged.
"We had hoped and prayed that we could save her," said Humane Society Director Renee Jones. "The damage was just too great."
DeeDee was euthanized Monday afternoon at the Brewton Animal Clinic.
Animal cruelty is a felony in Alabama. The Humane Society is asking for your help to catch the person(s) who tortured DeeDee. If you know anything about the case, please call the Humane Society of Escambia County at 251.867.6860.

And the sad thing is, this seems to be getting more prevalent. I wonder if the increase it violent crimes is related to this also. There have been quite a few violent criminals who started out with animal abuse-Jeffrey Dahmer, Columbine, Iceman and the list goes on.

I definetely agree with the comments that have been made already. These people are sick individuals and if they will hurt animals like that then I firmly believe that they will hurt people as well. What losers these people are. I say put them under the jail house.

The person that is responsible for this should be caught and punished. Paying a fine isn’t enough. They should be shot and tossed in a dumpster along with the man in Eight Mile who deliberately ran over someone’s pet Jack Russell terrier. What is wrong with people in this community?

I hope this person is caught, does serious jail time and then goes through animal cruelty counseling. People like this are capable of other violent criminal acts. Look at what happened at Columbine High School. The boys who turned their aggressions toward innocent classmates had a long history of animal torture. Parents - if you suspect that your child is capable of such heinous acts - seek counseling immediately. Don’t ignore it.

It breaks my heart to look at these photos and to realize that a human animal is capable of such cruel, violent, uncivilized behavior.

And maybe more private organizations should offer reward money to track and prosecute animal abusers. Money talks. Maybe it would wake up some people in our society and force them to report this cruelty and neglect. The dog fighters are sure making the money with gambling. Maybe the people that report it should too.

Thank you WKRG for your diligent efforts to end animal abuse and cruelty. I commend these young reporters for their aggressive efforts and interest. Animal cruelty exists in epidemic proportions all along the Gulf Coast and in our surrounding communities. Those of us that care are truly thankful for your assistance in making the public aware of these crimes.

I have also assisted with other rescues, one a cat that was dumped and ended up in my garage with its collar under its front arm and embedded in the muscle so severly that the smell of infection was nauseating and the cat had to receive physical therapy to walk again. I have friends who routinely rescue animals and offer help to people who appear to be struggling to take care of their animals. I say this not to applaud myself and friends, but to point out that we are everyday citizens, and that it takes everyone being aware and compassionate to stop cruelty in any form whether that is from obvious torture as in this story, starvation, neglect or dog-fighting. I hope people will realize what a tremendous problem this is and help do something about it.

While it saddens me to see the evident increase in animal cruelty, I am so grateful to WKRG for pursuing these stories. I believe you can make a positive impact in the community by making people aware of just how big a problem this is. While this happened in Brewton, it has happened in Mobile also-just check Pet-abuse.com for local activity. The sad thing is that many cases go unreported or undetected. I have personally rescued puppies dumped on the side of the road, a cat that had been surviving in the woods by my house, and several starving horses.

This form of violence is intolerable. If you could shoot a helpless little dog, you could shoot a human being. This is a criminal act. The abuser should be apprehended, prosecuted and serve time in prison. I hope the authorities in Brewton will follow through with this.
