Superintendent Roy Nichols said the teachers are mostly in hard-to-find subject areas.
Nichols said, "I had several pieces of paper cross my desk with lists of names of people who had been reassigned that had already been told they were going to be laid off. Mostly, at this point, its math and special ed teachers, but others will be coming back soon, too."
Jenny Parker is a math teacher at Davidson High School.
She said received a pink slip, but "the list of people that are going back into the classroom did not include any math teachers, or not many math teachers, so I feel fairly comfortable that I will be back at Davidson teaching next fall."
As for the Alabama State Legislature not approving an education budget, Nichols said that shouldn't have an effect on Mobile County.
The superintendent said he anticipated something like that might happen, and that he built in additional cuts.
But if there's proration, across the board state budget cuts, Nichols said, "You go back and you cut more deeply and, quite frankly, I'm not sure how to do that, we've cut so deeply now."
