The following is a press release from organizers of the Under Armour Senior Bowl:MOBILE, Ala. (Jan. 5) -- The talented field of contestants seeking the title of Senior Bowl Superstar for 2008 has been narrowed to three.
Elizabeth Mariah Carey, a nine-year old student at the Clark School of Math and Science and a resident of Prichard, Ala., Catherine Odom, a 19-year-old student at the University of Mobile from St. Stephens, Ala., and Shannon Rankins, a 29-year-old resident of Mobile, were named Senior Bowl Superstar finalists following preliminary competition held Saturday at the Mobile Civic Center Theater.
The fifth annual Senior Bowl Superstar will once again award the winner the unique opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the January 26 Under Armour
Senior Bowl game, as well as on the WKRG-TV Morning Show. The NFL Network, which televises the Senior Bowl each year, will also air the singing of the National Anthem during its Senior Bowl pre-game show.
"We were very pleased with not only the excellent turnout that we had on Saturday, but were amazed at the overall quality of the performers who took part in this year’s Superstar,” said Senior Bowl Sales and Marketing Director Chris Morgan. “We ended up with three outstanding finalists, each of whom would do a terrific job in singing the National Anthem in front of the over 40,000 fans who will fill Ladd Peebles Stadium for the 2008 Under Armour Senior Bowl, as well as on national television.”
The three finalists will perform the National Anthem and a song of their own choosing live on the WKRG-TV Morning Show at 9:00 a.m. next week. Rankins will perform live on Tuesday, Jan. 8, Carey on Wednesday, Jan. 9, and Odom on Thursday, Jan. 10. Taped highlights of those performances will also air on the WKRG Morning News Show from 5:00-7:00 a.m.
On Friday, Jan. 11, all three finalists will perform the National Anthem live during the WKRG-TV Morning Show.
The winner will be then be selected by viewers who cast their votes on the Senior Bowl website at www.seniorbowl.com or the WKRG-TV website at www.wkrg.com , with voting scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 11 and concluding at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13.
Last year, over 8,000 online votes were cast during the three days of Superstar voting. Mishondia Robinson, a 33-year-old resident of Mobile, won the competition.
The Senior Bowl Superstar winner will be announced live on the WKRG-TV Morning Show at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 14.
