Fairhope man sentenced in 2012 shooting of 2 young children

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man has been sentenced to two years in prison for shootings that killed a 5-year-old girl and injured her younger brother three years ago.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/1Q0Znxq ) 20-year-old Christopher Smith of Fairhope was sentenced Thursday after a Baldwin County jury convicted him of manslaughter and domestic violence in March.

Fairhope police say Smith fired a single rifle shot that killed 5-year-old Teela Murphy and wounded her 3-year-old brother, Jayden Smith, outside a mobile home in April 2012. Smith was 17 at the time of the shootings and his defense attorneys say he didn’t know the gun was loaded. The children were shot from 90 yards away.

Prosecutors tried to convict Smith of reckless murder, but the jury acquitted him on that charge.
