Mobile, Ala. (WKRG) — Officials with the City of Mobile are promising better police coverage in Tillman’s Corner. Mobile Police officially opened a new home for its 2nd Precinct on Wednesday.
“I think it will be a big improvement the officers will be closer to their field,” said Tillman’s Corner resident Jack Brunet.
The new location marks the first time the building has been located within precinct two. For the last few years, it has been in the same building as the 4th Precinct, miles away near the Mobile Museum of Art.
“It was mainly financial more than anything else couldn’t build out and maintain precinct two,” said Public Safety Director James Barber. City officials say overall this will increase efficiency for police officers in the 2nd Precinct.
“268,640 miles of travel that we will not have to be doing back and forth, we’ll save 7,700 gallons of fuel and we should cut response time by half. That is huge,” said Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson.
People in the neighborhood are happy about the change.
“This is our precinct so I like the fact that that it’s going to be so much closer you know going down to Museum Drive. It was a lot further away from where are houses are,” said homeowner Janine Brunet.
Members of the City Council also campaigned for the move. The city does not own the newly remodeled building. It’s being leased from the same shopping center that houses the Tillman’s Corner Post Office.
