Spring Hill College released the following statement concerning the resignation of softball coach Joe Guthrie:
MOBILE, Ala. –Spring Hill College (SHC) announces the resignation of head softball coach Joe Guthrie, as he has accepted an assistant coaching position with NCAA Division I program, University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL). Additionally, Spring Hill assistant coach Courtnay Foster, who is Guthrie’s wife, has also accepted an assistant’s position at ULL.
SHC Director of Athletics Jim Hall stated that a transition plan was immediately put in place with the expectation of announcing an interim coach by the end of the week. He and coaches informed the student-athletes of the changes in a meeting with the team on Sunday night as players returned from the Thanksgiving break.
“I was greatly disappointed to learn that Joe and Courtnay will be leaving us, but we all wish them much success,” said Hall. “They have accomplished a tremendous amount in a short time and we will continue to build on the positive momentum the program has enjoyed the last few years.”
“I am extremely grateful for my time at Spring Hill,” Guthrie said. “I appreciate all efforts of the players and staff. Though we are excited for a new opportunity, we will miss all of the fine people at SHC.”
In 2017, ULL finished the season ranked No. 19 in the final NCAA rankings after reaching the NCAA Tournament for the 19th consecutive season. The 2017 squad claimed the program’s fourth consecutive Sun Belt Conference championship, extended the string of 40-win seasons to 19 straight and had the program competing for an NCAA Regional championship for the 10th consecutive year before bowing to 6th-ranked LSU 5-1 in the regional championship game.
Spring Hill softball will open the 2018 season on Friday, Feb. 2, at the NCAA Division II Gulf Coast Invitational at the Sportsplex in Gulf Shores.
