“World’s Largest” Tencel Fiber Plant to be Built in Mobile County

An Austrian-based manufacturer of an eco-fiber plans on building its largest Tencel plant in Mobile County. Lenzing announced in a news release this morning they would build their largest Tencel manufacturing plant in Mobile. Operations are expected to begin in 2019.

Tencel is the brand name of what the company touts as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional textiles. It is a fiber they say is made from mostly tree products.

The news release says Mobile County was selected for its infrastructure and energy costs. The plant will be a major expansion of Lenzing’s current location in Axis, Alabama.  The news release says it’s an investment of 275 million Euros which translates to more than $291 million.  A corporate spokesman said the new facility will creating 168 new full-time jobs and begin construction in the first quarter of next year.
