For the second time in a row, the U.S Department of Commerce redesignating Southwest Alabama as a manufacturing community until 2018.
Laura O’Conner, IMCP Coordinator for the Mobile Area Chamber, explains that the designation gives Mobile an edge when applying for grants.
“Many federal funders will ask if you’re part of a manufacturing community,” O’Conner said. ““This re-designation brings national recognition to our ability to successfully collaborate to achieve results.”
With manufacturing serving as such an intricate part of Mobile, programs like those at Bishop State are working to prepare a local workforce for businesses looking to locate or hire here.
“Since working here, I have seen an increase in business and industry coming in and taking a look at our graduates and seeing if there’s something here that will benefit their company,” Annette Brown, welding instructor and department head said.
