According to a report from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Donna Martin, a 35-year-old from Flomaton, was killed during an illegal deer hunt last Friday near Pollard Landing in Escambia County.
The report details what led to the death of Martin. The preliminary investigation states that 31-year old Shannon Heath Bell was pulling a rifle out of a pick-up truck stock first. The rifle discharged and struck Martin in the stomach. She was transported to Brewton Hospital where she passed away during surgery.
Shannon Bell has been charged with hunting from a public road, hunting at night, hunting from a motor vehicle and hunting without a permit.
Outdoor Alabama advises that these charges are a public safety hazard and led to the death of Martin.
“Any hunting accident is a tragedy,” said Conservation Enforcement Officer David Smith in a press release. He added, “but when the parties know each other, it can be particularly difficult for both families.”
Smith advises that this tragedy could have been prevented if they would have been in compliance with the law and followed safety rules.
The death of Martin remains under investigation and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is assisting in the investigation.
