The Mobile City Planning Commission approves indoor shooting range/firearm training facility during their meeting on Thursday.
At the corner of Cody Road and Bruns Drive near Grelot Road, there’s talk of turning a wooded lot with a warehouse on it into an indoor shooting range and firearm training facility.
Since the property is already zoned in the Community Business District ( B-3), it wouldn’t need to go before Mobile City Council for approval.
Homeowners who live a few hundred feet away in Ashmoor Place have mixed feelings about the development.
“I don’t have a problem with it. It’s indoors, so I guess you’re not going to hear the sound,” one woman said.
” I think it would be a good place if it’s open to the public so people can go to learn how to use a firearm properly ,” resident Antoni Smith said.
“Normally, they keep us up to date on stuff, so I’m kind of surprised that we didn’t know about that, said resident Fletcher Robinson. ” It might cause trouble down the line.”
The required sign that’s supposed to be posted on the property to advertise the planning commission public hearing had blown over on its side so drivers passing by couldn’t see it when we drove by Tuesday.
We called Dennis Wilkins, the property owner who also owns Mudbrick Media next door. A receptionist on the phone told us Wilkins wouldn’t talk until after Thursday’s meeting and after the building was approved. We left a phone number in case he changed his mind, but didn’t hear back.

In response to the report, a member of the Planning and Zoning Department contacted us and said they were sending an employee to the site Wednesday morning to fix the “Planning Approval” sign.
