Mobile, AL (WKRG)
Since last week’s Trump win it’s been a question of “when” not “if” Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions will be appointed to Trump’s cabinet. Their relationship was fostered right here in Mobile when Trump held an early rally at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in August of 2015. Sessions appeared on stage with Trump and likely the first sitting politician to put on a “Make America Great Again” hat. Since that rally, Sessions was a close advisor and surrogate for the Trump Campaign. Sessions became the first sitting US Senator to endorse Trump for President in early 2016.
Since he was one of the first to jump on board the Trump train, there is speculation Sessions could have his pick of cabinet spots. Politico is reporting that Sessions might be Trump’s pick for Defense Secretary. Sessions has yet to say publicly if he wants the job or where he thinks he fits in a Trump administration.
A White House appointment seems like an almost certainty for Sessions. If that happens, Governor Bentley will be free to pick another person for the empty Senate seat. According to a recent column in AL.com, a short list of replacements includes Congresswoman Martha Roby, Attorney General Luther Strange, and Fairhope State Senator Trip Pittman.
