Fugitive Arrested for Highway Murder in Creola

UPDATE (5:30 p.m.) – Joseph Ryan Carter was in court Monday morning in Mobile county for a bond hearing.

During the hearing, prosecutors with the District Attorney’s office allege that Carter shot the Joe Thomas in the back of the head and then fled the scene.

Judge Jill Phillips presided over the hearing and set Carter’s bond at $200,000 with a $10,000 cash component.

Carter will be back in court next month for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 5.

The victim, Joe Thomas, is from Brewton, Alabama. Thomas does have a criminal record and was a registered sex offender. He was convicted in 2001 in Escambia County where the victim was only 10-years-old.

ORIGINAL STORY – Authorities in Mobile County have arrested a man suspected of killing another man on a highway.

On Sunday, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office tweeted that Joseph Ryan Carter was arrested in Escambia County and is now currently sitting in Mobile Metro Jail.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office says Carter fatally shot Joe Nathan Thomas in the back of the head Thursday morning on Interstate 65.

A witness told officials that she had been in a vehicle with Thomas and Carter earlier that night. She says that when the two men stepped out of the car, she heard a shot and saw Thomas fall to the ground.

Carter has been transferred to Mobile County Metro Jail. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
