Former State Senator, Civic Leader Dies

Funeral services will be held Monday (11/14) for former State Senator John Tyson, Senior, who passed away last week.

Tyson was a proverbial pillar of the community, having served in the U.S. Navy during World War 2, then the Korean War as a Naval Aviator.

He retired from the Navy after 40 years with the rank of Commander.

As a State Senator, he helped bring USS Alabama to Mobile as a floating museum and was a founder of the University of South Alabama where he served as a member of the board of trustees.

He also served in the Alabama House of Representatives.

He was named Veteran of the Year in Mobile in 2001 and Mobilian of the Year in 1997.

Visitation will be held today (11/13) at Radney Funeral Home in Mobile at 3155 Dauphin Street.

Visitation will also be held Monday from 9:00-11:00 am at Government Street Presbyterian Church at 300 Government Street in Mobile.

The funeral will follow at the church at 11:00 am.
