Playoff game delayed as dispute goes to state Supreme Court

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – A high school football playoff game has been delayed as the Alabama Supreme Court tries to sort out which team should play.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association said the Friday night game between Elba and Samson high schools was postponed after the court said it could not make a decision before next week.

Elba was originally supposed to play Washington County High School, but the athletic association yanked Washington County from the playoffs after ruling the school fielded an ineligible running back.

The school board and teen went to court disputing the removal. Judges in Washington and Geneva counties issued conflicting orders in favor of their hometown teams playing in the game.

The athletic association has asked the Supreme Court what to do in face of the conflicting decisions.
