The man who led the joint task force to rescue people from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina visited the port city Thursday.
Lt. General Russell Honore was called ‘that John Wayne dude’ by then New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. Honore was the guest speaker of the 2nd annual Hargrove Foundation Charity Gala. The foundation was established by Hargrove Engineering and Constructors headquartered in Mobile.
Honore talked to News 5 about what made the joint task force rescue mission successful, as 60,000 residents of New Orleans struggled to recover from the storm. Many of them had taken refuge in the Superdome.
The general, who retired in 2008, said the task force came with 250 helicopters, 20 ships, 2000 Marines and the USS Iwo Jima. “We came big, ” he said.
