According to Mobile County Probate Judge Don Davis, Mobile County was unable to report absentee ballot returns last night due to scanner malfunctions. The county has two ballot scanners used to count absentee ballots. Both ballot scanners are programmed to process different ballot styles but were unable to communicate with each other to produce results.
There are a total of 5,600 absentee ballots that have yet to be counted. Absentee ballots make up nearly three percent of the 165,000 ballots cast in Mobile County.
The absentee ballots will have to be manually entered into the computer system until the problem can be detected and fixed. This means official statewide results will be delayed until all the votes are counted.
