Arrest Made in Arson of American Legion Building in Mobile

MOBILE, AL (WKRG) — Mobile Fire-Rescue has announced the arrest of a man believed to have deliberately set fire to an American Legion in Mobile.

According to spokesman Steve Huffman, the 33-year-old was taken into custody Friday afternoon.  The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, is being questioned at Mobile Police Headquarters before being booked at Mobile Metro on a second-degree arson charge.

The American Legion at Government Street and Dearborn Street was set on fire around 1:00am on Friday morning. Surveillance video obtained from a nearby business shows a male subject setting the first fire. After it goes out, the video shows him setting a second fire, before walking away.

Fortunately the fire did not spread and was discovered and reported at approximately 6 a.m. the same morning. Firefighters quickly contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to the inside of the historic structure.
