The Mobile Police Department is investigating a homicide Thursday morning at the Church Street Graveyard.
Police were called out around 7 am. A groundskeeper found the man dead inside the cemetery on Church Street near the Washington Street intersection, which is behind the Mobile Public Library on Government Street.
News 5 talked to people near the scene who were shocked to find out what happened. Some believe the man was a homeless man that often came to hang out in the library next to the grave yard.
“The last time I saw him he was in the graveyard around 6pm because I saw him out the library window,” said Ron Claxton, the victim’s friend.
At this point, the identity of the man shot to death has not been released, nor how he died. Police are investigating the death as a murder. Those News 5 talked with are worried it was a dispute over goods, or money.
“This was a cold blooded murder over a little cash I’m assuming cause the way they described the body on the ground he was probably passed out when this happened,” said Connie Gardner, Mobile.
Others also tell us the cemetery is where some homeless go to oddly find refuge without being kicked out by police.
“Mainly some people stay in there because like she said they’re homeless, they don’t have anywhere to go and it’s sad to see this going on,” said Karen Sanford, Mobile.
A friend remembers the victim as a nice, and honest person who kept to himself.
“He was alright, he just drank a lot, he was homeless and he drank a lot. He was 37 he just had a birthday,” said Claxton.
This is the 37th murder in the city of Mobile in 2016.
Police are still investigating and working on recovering possibly video from surveillance cameras in the area, we will update you with more details as they become available.
