Child dies after being hit by pickup truck in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Police are on the scene of an accident in the Central Park community, where a little girl, was struck by a vehicle. The accident happened on Bessemer Road and Avenue Q.

Police tell CBS42 that the child has now died.

Birmingham Police say it appears to have been a group crossing the street on their way to school, and this kids might have tried to cross back. The victim is said to be a girl younger than 10. Neighbors in the area say there isn’t a crossing guard for the intersection, which lots of kids cross daily.

An eyewitness tells us she was behind the vehicle that hit the girl. She says the child’s brother motioned to her to come back across the street, and that’s when she was hit by a pickup work truck. The woman says she offered her shawl to cover the girl. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

At 10:00 Wednesday morning, Birmingham police began clearing the scene. Bessemer Road, which had been shut down, will reopen shortly.
