UPDATE (2 p.m.) – The driver of the car that crashed into the Intracoastal Waterway has been identified as Charles Bemis, a 74-year-old from Summerdale.
According to law enforcement officials, the exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined, but police believe he may have suffered a medical emergency.
ORIGINAL STORY – Emergency crews in Gulf Shores are working the scene of an accident where a vehicle crashed into the Intracoastal Waterway.
Dive crews are in the water next to Canal Road working to recover the vehicle. They are attempting to tow the vehicle underwater to a nearby boat launch.
Law enforcement tells News 5 that the driver is still inside the vehicle.
Sources tell News 5 that several witnesses jumped into the Canal to try and remove the driver, but were unsuccessful.
The incident happened in the 800 block of East Canal Rd. near 9th Street and the new Tacky Jack’s Restaurant just before sunrise Wednesday morning.
The vehicle, which is an SUV, was headed westbound on Canal Rd. when the incident occurred.
The accident caused a traffic back-up this morning on Canal Rd. after crews were forced to close portions of the road.
