4PM UPDATE: STABBING MORE OF A “CUT”

The Alabama Department of Corrections has confirmed a News 5 report that a corrections officer has been stabbed in the head inside Holman Prison in Atmore.

The corrections officer — whose name is not being released but has been identified as a lieutenant — was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is in stable condition.

In a recent update, the attack has been clarified as a “cut above the eyelid.”

The stabbing occurred around 1:00pm in the cafeteria when the lieutenant was attempting to control inmate Robert Washington as he made threatening remarks to other corrections officers. According to the DoC, Washington assaulted the lieutenant with a makeshift weapon.

No other inmates or officers were involved in the incident.

Washington, 27, is being charged with the assault. Washington is serving a 20-year sentence on a 2010 first-degree robbery conviction out of Montgomery County.

As you might recall, this is the second time a Holman corrections officer has been stabbed in the head in the last two months. In September, inmate Cleveland Cunningham attacked corrections officer Kenneth Bettis, 44, also in the Holman Cafeteria. Bettis, a Monroeville resident, would succumb to head trauma and die about two weeks later.

A Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT) will remain at the facility to augment the prison’s security staff. The prison is locked down while ADOC investigates the incident.
