ALDOT began the construction work on the old I-65 bridge deck last Friday. Crews have been working around the clock in order to complete the project on time. In preparation for the project, ALDOT closed off a portion of Cottage Hill Road. Now that the project is officially underway they have reduced the interstate to two lanes in both directions and cut the speed limit to 45 miles-per-hour. These closures have caused many drivers to seek out alternate routes.
In particular, drivers have begun using Airport Boulevard and Montlimar Drive to avoid congestion in the construction area. This has caused unusual traffic backups on both of these roads.
ALDOT says crews are working around the clock to ensure the project is done on time. Construction is set to be completed by November 18th.
