16-year-old Marquis Love was arrested the day after a student was shot in the stomach on the campus of Vigor High School in Prichard. The shooting happened Tuesday. Love was arrested at his attorney’s office and voluntarily turned himself in. He was charged with attempted assault second degree.
Love was released on bond yesterday, but he is back in jail tonight.
“The charges have been upgraded to attempted murder. This is coming directly from the district attorney’s office,” says Sgt. Robert Martin.
Because of the new charge, Love was arrested today and formally charged again with attempted murder.
“The district attorney is trying to put out the message that if you commit a crime of this nature, you’re going to face the consequences to the fullest extent of the law,” says Martin.
Martin believes this was just an argument between two boys and not gang related. Still, the amount of gun violence in the area has him worried.
“Gun violence with teens, gun violence with adults, it’s just an epidemic almost.”
The gun used in the shooting is still missing. Love was arrested by the collective efforts of the Prichard Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF.
Meanwhile, the student who was shot is expected to make a full recovery.
