GULF SHORES, AL- State officials have shut down one of Baldwin County’s most popular beach attractions.
On Monday, officials with the Alabama Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources issued the Gulf Adventure Center at Gulf State Park a cease and desist order. That means the company can no longer offer zip line tours or kayak rentals at Lake Shelby.
The owner of the zip line says he hasn’t been told why he can longer operate. Managing partner Tom Schlinkert says the attraction has generated more than $300,000 in revenue for the state park and has made on-site improvements.
State officials haven’t given us a reason, either. In a one-sentence statement issued by Gulf State Park, we were simply told the contract for the zip line has expired as of September 30th and will not be renewed.
A petition to keep the zip line and water sports attractions open has been created on http://www.change.org.
