Escambia County Sheriff’s Deputies say they are looking for a suspect in a deadly shooting. It happened on Aquamarine Avenue off West Fairfield Drive. One person was killed, and another was hurt but is stable.
The shooting happened around 4 o’clock Monday evening. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office has not released the name of the victim, the person injured, or the other two people involved.
“Well, unfortunately, it’s the same old tale in some parts of Escambia county,” said Sheriff David Morgan, Escambia County. “We believe this was narcotics related, but now, right now, the only thing that we have from witnesses, is that an argument ensued between the combatants. So again, were saying narcotics because this was a known narcotic area. It may have been over, you know, a lottery ticket, you never know until we get the facts out from all the witnesses.”
District 3 Commissioner Lumon May also came to the scene. He says he grew up with the mother of the victim.
“The act of senseless violence has plagued us for far too long,” said Commissioner May. “It’s a systemic problem in terms of the urban core that we have to address.”
Sheriff Morgan cautioned community members against going on social media to speculate.
“Please, help us hold this down,” the sheriff said. “That’s how a community spins out of control. You have a grapevine that takes over, you’re passing on misinformation, and trust me, the truth will have no bearing upon what you read on your Facebook page.”
“I said to the mother, we can’t bring him back, but what we can do is continue to put forth the programming and the things that were doing to prevent this from happening to yet another family,” Commissioner May said.
Shortly after most of the scene was cleared, deputies headed back to the area. A neighbor says there was some sort of fight going on, but they did not hear gunshots.
A deputy said it’s not likely names will be released Monday night.
