The first charter school in Alabama will be in Mobile.
The Accel Day and Evening Academy is set to open in the fall of 2017
The academy is for students who have fallen behind in their studies, dropped out or are looking for a new career direction. Students must be between the ages of 16 and 21.
Two other groups in the Huntsville area applied to be a charter school, but they received mixed results. The Edge Preparatory Academy, a K-4 school, was denied charter school status on Tuesday. Another group called the Sports Leadership and Management Foundation wanted to open an elementary school. It was granted preliminary approval today. It must prove that it will not violate a desegregation decree before given full approval.
