What’s Working: Volunteers Help Foreigners Learn English

In tonight’s What’s Working, we are focusing on the International Language School in Mobile. This is a series of classes for people who are learning English. It’s a ministry of the Mobile Baptist Association. English as a Second Language classes (ESL) are offered several times throughout the week. The students come from over 40 different countries.

The classes are taught by volunteers like Cindy Nelson. Nelson teaches a beginner class. Her students are from Moldova, Mexico, and Japan. She says, “I also do it because of the love of Christ in me. It’s a way to serve and share the love of Christ with other people.” Dottie Vacik is also a volunteer teacher.  Her students have been coming for years. “They are here because they want to be, and they are here to conquer our language.” Vacik is retired college professor.

The Mobile Baptist Association is looking volunteers to be involved in the classes. Contact Bobby Morton at bmorton@mobilebaptists.org. You can also visit mobilebaptists.org.
