BAY MINETTE, AL- The Baldwin Beach Express North would connect the existing Beach Express from Interstate 10 to I-65 near Bay Minette.
The county commission was hoping to use money from the BP settlement to help fund the 200 million dollar highway, but the 55 million dollars Baldwin County got in the agreement obviously isn’t enough.
Voters will be asked to approve a Baldwin County toll authority on the November ballot. It would give the legislature the power to establish a toll authority to oversee the construction and operation of future toll roads, including the Baldwin Beach Express North.
Commissioner Chris Elliott says the North Baldwin Beach Express is essentially “shovel ready” and could be built fairly quickly. The road has been mapped and environmental permits have already been approved for the 22 mile extension.
Elliott also says the new road would only impact a few property owners because it would be built in one of the most rural areas in Baldwin County.
