They haven’t played a home football game yet, but the University of West Florida scored big today! Pen Air Federal Credit Union gave the university one million dollars, and in return, will get naming rights for the football field.
“Today, Pen Air Federal Credit Union’s partnership with West Florida is taken to the next level,” said Dr. Brendan Kelly, Vice President for University Advancement.
That level actually takes Pen Air to the ground. A one million dollar gift buys them naming rights to the football field.
“We’re proud to have you on our very first, absolutely drop dead gorgeous football field at the university,” said Dr. Judith A. Bense, President of UWF.
This isn’t the first time Pen Air has helped out the university. They’re also partnered with the Alumni Association, College of Business, and UWF Athletics.
“We believe football is a really important part of the community, and it really binds and brings people together from all different walks of life,” said Stu Ramsey, President and CEO of Pen Air. “We believe strongly that Coach Shinnick and his team are going to do just that here in the Pensacola community.”
The new stadium is being built around the field already on campus. The groundbreaking is tentatively set for 18 months from now.
“As a guy who likes to throw the ball, and an offense that likes to air it out, you know, you’ve had the air raid offense, you know, we can talk about this donation continuing the Pen Air raid offense here at UWF,” Coach Shinnick joked. “We continue to make this work, so, were very thankful, extremely blessed with this type of support for our program and for our university, and we want to keep this going. Hopefully, we can keep that shirt “Still Undefeated” around for a little while longer. We’ll do our best,” he finished.
UWF has a two-year contract with the Blue Wahoos Stadium, so they’ll play the first two seasons by the bay.
The Argos won their season opener, beating Ave Maria 45-0. They’ll have their first home game this weekend and it’s a sellout! They’ll kick off at 6 PM Saturday against Missouri S&T.
