There’s some excitement at the Gulf Breeze Zoo these days because of a new arrival.
Gibson, the young reticulated giraffe, was born just a little over a month ago on Aug. 2.
According to zoo officials, the giraffe stood 5’6″ tall at birth and will continue to grow at a rate of about an inch per day for the next 6 months to a year. They nourish his development with more than 17 pints of specialized milk formula per day along with a generous amount of hay.
Male giraffes can reach 18 feet tall, so while he may be tall now, he certainly has a long way to go.
Both he and his mother can be seen everyday at the zoo between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., so long as the weather’s favorable.
