Home for a Hero
Handing over the keys to a new four bedroom home.

Ten years ago when P.D. Rains was lying somewhere in Iraq, not knowing if he would live or die, he could have never imagined a day like this. A gathering of friends, family and complete strangers who on donated land, donated everything, built a house.

“Thank you for serving our country,” said Mike Henriksen. “Thank you for letting us serve you.”

P.D., his wife Jessica and their four girls have a brand new, fully furnished, four bedroom home because of the kindness of strangers. “You’ve blessed my whole family, not just me,” P.D. told the crowd gathered to honor him.

Inside, there were squeals from the girls as they each explored their new bedrooms and gratitude from their parents. “I don’t think either one of us actually believed it was going to happen,” said Jessica. “It’s setting in now,” added Rains.

Eight months from groundbreaking to a new house and for the Rains family this is truly like coming home. P.D. was raised next door. “Went in the Army and came back and my parents had sold it and moved. But, I grew up here and I love it here and just as long as she’s with me, I’m going to stay here.”

A house becomes a home for a hero. “I was happy with Jess and the kids out in Summerdale,” said P.D., “and then this happened. It’s amazing. God’s blessed us.”

“Home for a Hero” is made possible through the Baldwin County Home Builders Charitable Foundation. More than 50 individuals and businesses contributed to the project.
