A big announcement out of Rio from Bubba Watson this past Saturday, but it has nothing to do with the Olympics.
The Blue Wahoos took to the field for a regular season game Monday night, but next June, they’ll be hosting the All-Star game for the Southern League. Most fans attending the game said they weren’t surprised by the honor. They’d actually been waiting for it!
They’ve won Ballpark of the year twice, in 2012 and 2013. They nabbed Organization of the Year in 2012 and 2015.
So when Bubba Watson announced via video message from the Olympics in Rio his team would be hosting, team president Bruce Baldwin commended the hard work of his organization.
“I think that you walk in the door and you hold your breath and you cross your fingers but if you do it right like you know how to do it, then you should be ok,” Baldwin said.
He commented about the benefits to the city, and his excitement to show off Pensacola.
“To us, it’s really a big deal,” Baldwin said. “Not only do we represent the best of the best in the league, but I just have a feeling Pensacola is one of the best cities in the league. So we get to showcase Pensacola as well.”
So how long will it take to prepare for an event like this take? Mr. Baldwin said about 6-8 months.
A parade, possible home run derby, and other family friendly events are being planned to go along with the game. Festivities take place on June 19th & 20th.
