Mobile, AL — WKRG
Shots fired in downtown Mobile early this morning according to Mobile Police.
There were at least two incidents reported. The first happened around St. Michael and Claiborne Street around 2:40 a.m.
They tell us 26-year-old Gerald Hale got into a fight with another man and then both started firing. Hale was taken to the hospital for treatment and then taken to jail, charged with reckless endangerment and receiving stolen property since the gun he had was stolen.
The second reported shooting happened just a little over an hour later at 3:50 a.m. near the Saddle Up Saloon on North Jackson street. A 24-year-old man was injured and taken to the hospital. He is listed in critical condition.
We asked folks if this changes their minds about going downtown at night.
“Well, sort of, I don’t really like coming downtown anyway without some sort of group,” says Kate Conner.
“Probably after midnight, one, two a-m certainly, there’s really no reason to be out here alone especially females by themselves,” says Jay Crane.
“I personally don’t feel unsafe because nothing has happened to me, which sounds a little naive but I know things do happen,” says Jazmine Crane.
Police say the two shootings were not related.
These incidents come roughly a month after a News Five reporter witnessed a shooting with no injuries early Sunday morning in the downtown entertainment district. Business owners have complained about frequent cruising and loitering clogging downtown mobile after hours and scaring away potential customers.
