After months of studying, five inmates at Mobile’s Metro Jail graduated today with their GEDs, parading down the jail hallway in graduate attire.
This is the 7th year of the program. The warden says that out of nearly 200 graduates over the years, only about 20 have returned to jail. Today was a day many of them thought would never come.
“It feels great,” said Saraya Atkins, a graduate. “It’s very encouraging and makes you want to push forward.”
Shawnette Spicer, Saraya’s mother, said, “Today is the day I dreamed and prayed for many days because I know my daughter. I’m excited. She proved herself today and proved exactly what I knew she was capable of.”
We’ll have more of the graduates emotional stories tonight on News 5.
