Senate candidate and Democratic Congressman Patrick Murphy sent Gov. Rick Scott a message in a bottle: a big, fat clump of algae.
Murphy said Scott fails to provide an adequate long-term solution for the deadly algae outbreaks triggered by water flowing from Lake Okeechobee, so he sent several bottles of the algae-tainted water to Scott’s office. In addition, he criticized Scott for not visiting the St. Lucie River to see the problem for himself.
The thick, green algae covered waterways and beaches. Murphy called on Scott to use conservation funds to buy property south of the lake so water can be treated and released from the Everglades.
Scott signed a bill this year that dedicates up to $200 million per year for Everglades Restoration.
