Summer Crops: The Hot Thing

So we’re heading into the hottest part of the year…is anything still growing?  Gardening expert Bill Finch says, “Yes! Plenty!”  Don’t give up on your vegetable gardens this time of year.

Okra is a great summer crop that is producing well right now.  Basil is a great summer green.  Eggplant is a summer crop that comes in lots of varieties; pick ‘em while they’re still small-ish for better flavor.  And speaking of variety, peppers come in a zillion types that all do well in our hot summer climate.

So, the question is, can we still get in on the summer crop action?  Bill says yes, you can still put eggplant, okra and peppers in the ground in mid-summer and enjoy them well into fall.

Other summer crops to plant now include southern peas, yard-long beans, watermelons and pumpkins…your pumpkins will be ready for Halloween.
