FOLEY, AL- Heather Porter his having a rough week.
On Monday, Porter was caught in the grasp of a frightening and dangerous diabetic emergency, crashed her truck into a hair salon and injured a customer.
Porter, who says she checks her blood sugar 8 to 10 times a day, became disoriented and was semiconscious when she slammed into the building.
Porter says the frightening accident would not have happened if she had a medical device called a Continuous Glucose Monitor. A CGM checks levels and alerts with loud alarms if dangerous levels are recorded.
Doctors say CGM is an effective tool, but it’s not perfect. Doctors say it’s always important to check their blood sugar before getting behind a wheel.
Heather Porter has Medicare. Medicare does not cover the cost of the $1,500 machine.
Porter’s family has set up a Go Fund Me page to help with medical costs.
