The product is scheduled to be made available in New York beginning Thursday, Jan. 7. New York is the only state besides Minnesota to limit medical marijuana to non-smokeable extracts delivered in forms such as capsules, vaporizers and liquids taken orally, and it’s one of few states with a physician training requirement. New York limited its program to 20 dispensaries, each offering up to five brands, and a shorter list of qualified conditions than some other states allow. (AP Photo/Jennifer Peltz)

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Medical marijuana is expected to be available in Florida by the end of next week after the state’s Department of Health granted its first authorization to dispense to one of the six dispensing organizations.

The department informed Trulieve and Hackney Nursery – the Northwest Florida dispensing organization – that they have received authorization to process and dispense low-THC cannabis. Trulieve CEO Kim Rivers said they will be able to begin statewide delivery almost immediately and intend to begin sales at a dispensary facility in Tallahassee within the coming days.

Patients suffering from cancer, epilepsy, chronic seizures and chronic muscle spasms can order medical marijuana by contacting their physician, as long as both are listed in a state registry. Turlieve said high-THC cannabis for patients with terminal conditions is expected to be available next month.
