Police Officer Shot in Randolph County During Hostage Situation

HEFLIN, Ala. (WIAT) — An officer was shot on Saturday by a suspect that eventually took his own life taking his own wife hostage, according to the City of Heflin Police Department.

The standoff took place in the Swagg Cove area of Lake Wedowee, according to officials. The officer that was shot had a bullet hit him in the tricep, which passed through cleanly and will not require surgery, according to his fellow officers.

During the ordeal, roads were closed, and multiple police departments were on the scene by the time the situation had ended, including: ALEA, Oxford Police, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Randolph County Sherriff’s Office and Oxford SWAT.

The officer is recovering at this time, and the hostage is expected to be fine. The investigation has been turned over to the FBI.
