A man being pursued by deputies drowned in Pensacola Bay over the weekend. He was trying to give Deputies the slip– all over a stolen cell phone.
Escambia County Sheriff’s Deputies got the call about the stolen phone Saturday night. Deputies found Johnny Hall at a bar near Zaragoza and Palafox Streets. Hall handed over the phone. Then he took off running down Baylen Street. When he reached the dead end of the street, deputies say Hall dove headfirst into the water at the Baylen Slips Marina.
“He was treading water. An officer said in his report, he turned around to look for a life preserver or something he could hand to him or throw to him,” said Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan. “He said in the few moments that he turned away, he noticed when he turned back around… That he had gone down underneath the water.”
Sheriff Morgan said he cannot release much more information at this time. His office is waiting for autopsy and toxicology reports.
