Fugitive Murder Suspect Arrested in Gulf Shores

A murder suspect on the run after allegedly killing a woman from the Birmingham area has been arrested in Gulf Shores.

Gulf Shores Police say they found Matthew Weston Carden, 35, on Thursday afternoon at the Gulf Shores State Park Campground after receiving a call for a suspicious person. An active meth lab was also found, leading to the arrest of two people with Carden.

Police say Carden, a native of Ashville, Alabama, was involved with in the January 2015 murder of 48-year-old Beverly Carole Doran.  Doran was “brutally” killed over a drug debt by Carden and two others, who allegedly left Doran’s bloody body on the floor of their home in Jefferson County, according to reports from central Alabama.

On Thursday, Carden was located by Gulf Shores Police and gave the officers a false name to conceal his identity, police said.  He was later identified during a preliminary interview.

“He told us he had been down here for about four weeks and he cut an ankle monitor to leave that area,” says Sgt. Jason Woodruff with Gulf Shores Police.

Carden also told investigators he knew he was going to prison for life and wanted one more summer before being locked away.

Carden is being held on the Jefferson County murder warrant and one count of Obstructing Justice using a false identity.

The officers also arrested two Coden, Alabama natives who were found at the campground site with Carden. Shane Andrew Delaney, 26, and Tina Theresa Strange, 33, face drug charges after an active meth lab was discovered during the investigation and arrests.

Delaney and Strange are charged with unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance in the first degree and trafficking in methamphetamine.

The case was handled by the Gulf Shores Police Department, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (for the campground site) and the Baldwin County Sheriff Office’s Drug Task Force.
