Alabama could soon host illegal, unaccompanied minors from Central and South America. The federal government is evaluating Naval Air Station Whiting Field for semi-permanent housing. If approved, the minors would come to Silverhill and Orange Beach Air Fields. Governor Bentley is fighting the move.
“It is actions like this that led me to file a lawsuit in January against the federal government refugee resettlement program,” said Bentley in a news release. “While I am extremely sympathetic to the needs of unaccompanied minors, as Governor of Alabama, I feel strongly that states should play an active role in the decision-making process. Alabama Senator Richard Shelby and Congresswoman Martha Roby have also voiced their opposition to the plan.
