18-year-old Donnavia Williams and her mother, 41-year-old Jennifer Williams, pleaded not guilty last week to four different felony charges in Escambia County Circuit Court.
The mother and daughter were arrested in late April after an indictment from an Escambia County Grand Jury for the hit-and-run death of 12-year-old Devon Brian Spencer.
Devon Spencer was killed in early February when he was struck from behind by a car on his walk to school.
Donnavia Williams is charged with manslaughter for reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to notify law enforcement and assault second degree for reckless driving. Her mother, Jennifer Williams, faces one charge of failure to notify law enforcement.
Both defendants are out of jail on bond. No date has been set for the start of the trial.
Prosecutors claim Donnavia Williams was driving in a reckless manner at a speed that was not reasonable under the conditions when she struck Devon Spencer. The speed of the vehicle and her inability to see clearly out of the windshield led to the death of Devon Spencer, according to the indictment.
Devon Spencer initially survived the crash, but he sustained significant head trauma and died five days later at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.
