Corrections Officer Accused of Smuggling Pot into Prison

V’aires Davis, 24, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and for promoting contraband within a correctional facility.

SPRINGVILLE, Ala. (AP) – A former Alabama corrections officer accused of trying to smuggle marijuana into a state prison has been arrested.

Alabama Department of Corrections spokesman Bob Horton said in an emailed statement Friday that 24-year-old V’aires Davis is charged with possession of a controlled substance and promoting contraband within a correctional facility.

Horton says Davis was inspected at a checkpoint in the St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville when he came to work Thursday and officials found that he was carrying marijuana wrapped in black tape.

Horton says Davis, who has worked with the department since 2015, resigned from his position and is now being held in the St. Clair County jail. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
