Several members with the City of Mobile and the County came back from a trip to Havana, Cuba Thursday.
The delegation included Mayor Sandy Stimpson, Bill Sisson with the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, and Commissioner Jerry Carl. Together they met with heads of state in commerce, tourism, and culture. The goal of the visit was network and re-introduce Havana officials to their sister city, Mobile.
But, since the US has opened up relations with Cuba, competition is growing for business.
“You know there’s a real opportunity there as things normalize with Cuba, we’re in a perfect position to take advantage of that here. And being a port city, certainly there’s more trade opportunity. Our port already trades with Cuba and so there’s lots of room for expansion,” said Bill Sisson.
And he says it’ll take more cooperation with the community to build up a stronger relationship.
